I love chalkboards and chalkboard art so it's no surprise that I fell in love with this series.  Hubby gifted the fabric, threads and charts for the whole series to me for Christmas.  I've read on some stitchy blogs that they love the WDW fabric and decided to give it a try.  I have to say, however, that I had so much trouble stitching on this fabric that I wouldn't choose to stitch on this fabric again.  Even though I like the way these look, the fabric feels thin and flimsy to me and I think that makes my stitches looks sloppy.  I normally stitch in hand, but had to use a hoop, which is uncomfortable for me and because of the dark fabric, I can only stitch these during the day when the sun is shining.

I'm going to finish these in a flat ornament style and I'm thinking I'll add magnets to the back to make displaying them easier.  I'm looking for precut matboard.  Hobby Lobby used to sell it in different sizes, but they don't have it any more.  Any ideas where I can order it?

Anyone else stitching these?  What fabric are you using?
How are you finishing them?

Spring is coming!  In the past week, we've had much warmer temps and our snow is just about all gone.  One day the snow pile was 2 feet deep and the next it was completely gone.  The Resurrection Lilies and Tulips are coming up and I saw 2 Robins in the backyard this morning!

Have a great weekend!

  1. Congratulations on your first 2 Chalk finishes! They look great! A tip I heard was to spray a bit of starch on the fabric before stitching. I am doing this series, but had some fabric dyed (not as dark as DMC 413, but a bit darker than 414) for me because I am not a fan of Weeks fabrics and I was unable to see the holes even with my magnifying light. I am still undecided on how they will be finished.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  2. So sweet! Sorry it is going a bit difficult for you.
Your a bit ahead of us with the weather up here maybe. No robins yet. And no plants popping up.

  3. They look great. I love that linen color, but don't like wimpy or soft feeling fabric. I like rough and stiff better so I don't think I'll be ordering WDW - thanks for the info.

I love the designs too and am still considering purchasing them...maybe one day! :)

  5. Pam, I must be in the minority. I like softer linens and use scrolls or qsnaps. Dark fabric is difficult though and I need bright daylight to stitch. Like the 2 you have done and am looking forward to your finishes.

  6. So glad Spring is finally coming your way! I can imagine how difficult it might be to stitch on the very dark fabric. I am a coward, I have never tried it.

  8. Some of my qualifications for stitching a piece are: Lots of white? Forget it! and: stiff fabric? Forget it! And lastly: Dark fabric? Hmmm... who is it for?? You are doing well... and your stitching looks fine. Hugs!

  9. They look great, Pam! I hope to stitch these, too, but it is hard to find the suggested fabric available anywhere right now (I guess a lot of stitchers must be working on this series this year). After reading your comments about that fabric I may look for an alternative, too.
